I Opened My Eyes

One way to open your eyes is to ask yourself, “What if I had never seen this before? What if I knew I would never see it again?”

Rachel Carson

What is it to "wake up", or as Rachel Carson states, to open your eyes?

It takes a level of curiosity to invite wonder into your world.

  • Curiosity needs the courage to be in a place of not knowing.

  • Curiosity needs a commitment to practice opening yourself up to questions.

  • Curiosity needs a settled nervous system.

What if I had never seen this path? I would wonder where it goes, who has been there before me, and what has all the wildlife and vegetation witnessed over time? -- Non judgment

What if I knew I would never see it again? I would take it all in with gratitude and awe. I would love, appreciate, and honor it just as it is at that moment. -- Deep gratitude.

I honestly don't know a more powerful practice. It changes how we step into our day, our interactions, and our own emotions.

What is the shift? It automatically connects us with our surroundings. It moves us away from the ego just enough to open our awareness to the people and environment around us.

However, if we are in a state of agitation, stress, and anxiety this is a challenging frame of mind to get to. If the nervous system is activated, it's almost impossible to "open your eyes".

This act of curiosity can help settle the nervous system.

A Practice to Help Open Your Eyes

  1. Once a day, any time that works for you, and pause.

  2. In this pause, take three deep breaths. I call these belly breaths.

  3. Where ever you are, look around and ask yourself these two questions:

  • What if I had never seen this before?

  • What if I knew I would never see it again?

4. Notice how you feel.

That's the practice. And remember, there is no right or wrong. This is simply the practice of opening yourself up, being curious, and noticing how you feel.

This is the path back to yourself.

Be well, my friends. Take the time to be good to yourself and those around you.
